Judo was invented by Dr Jigoro Kano in Japan in the late 1800s.
He took some elements from the martial art of jiujitsu, removed the
highly dangerous blows, kicks and striking techniques, and developed
new techniques of throwing and pinning.
Kano named his new style of combat judo which is generally interpreted as meaning "the gentle way".
The first set of codified rules were written in the 1950s, and judo was
accepted as a full competitive sport in the Olympics at the Munich
games of 1972.
Into the 21st century judo continues to adapt and change as the sport's
governing bodies strive to make judo more attractive to a global
television audience.
