sogogachi A "compound win", whereby a player wins a contest by the combination of a waza-ari technique and a penalty by his opponent. sonomama Referee's word to freeze the action of the players during a contest. The call is usually made in ground work when the referee needs to check for an infringement of the rules, or to check the state of the player being held. soremade The referee's call to end a contest. tachiwaza Standing techniques. tatami The judo mat, originally made of compressed straw, now of shock-absorbing rubber and foam. tewaza Hand techniques. toketa A call made by the referee to indicate that a ground hold on a player has been broken. tori The attacking player; the player executing a technique. uke The defending player; the player on whom a technique is applied. ukemi Breakfalls.
